The future of Precision Policing

It seems strange to be talking about the future when the technology hasn’t been widely adopted in the present but it’s key to recognise that through the usage to date that has proven its worth, we have already identified the next steps.

Retrospective facial recognition (RFR) has been proven in operations to help solve investigations into:

  • Murder
  • Sexual offences
  • Assault
  • Robbery
  • Burglary
  • Possession of firearms
  • Racially and religiously aggravated offences

But the millions of ‘Caught on Camera’ images that the police already possess need to be processed so extending the capabilities to run batched searches and access this historical backlog will help solve even more crimes and allow forces to make better use of their resources – supported by technology – to reduce the levels of extra investigations and quicken processes to get to a result.

And the world of biometrics is constantly evolving with NEC at the forefront of this technology. Having performed exceptionally as part of the National Physical Laboratory’s Independent Evaluation of Accuracy and Equitability we will continue to develop our capability and, globally, continue research into Facial and Face Part analysis with the ultimate aim to continue to help policing:

  • Solve crime and close cases
  • Get a significant return on the investment
  • Protect the public
  • Focus resources effectively
