Get ready for the return of the UK HGV Levy from August 2023

From 1st August 2023, international drivers and hauliers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) weighing over 12 tonnes will once again be required to pay the HGV Levy when using UK roads. The levy was originally introduced in 2014 but was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PRESS RELEASE

06/06/2023: From 1st August 2023, international drivers and hauliers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) weighing over 12 tonnes will once again be required to pay the HGV Levy when using UK roads. The levy was originally introduced in 2014 but was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both UK and international drivers and operators will need to register and pay the levy before entering the country, as failure to do so could result in penalties and fines.  The levy, now based broadly on vehicle carbon emissions, will ensure all hauliers make a contribution when they use the UK’s road network.

The HGV Levy website makes it easy to calculate the most cost-effective rate based on how often a vehicle is driven in the UK, whether that is on a daily, weekly or annual basis.  This ensures drivers are charged fairly and accurately for their use of UK roads.

Lorries that meet the latest Euro VI emissions standards will pay at least 10% less than older vehicles to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly HGVs on the UK’s roads.

Payment for the levy can be made using fuel cards, credit cards or PayPal at www.gov.uk/hgv-levy

The UK’s Department for Transport, after consulting on the reforms, said: “It is important that hauliers, international and domestic, pay their fair share, and it is right to ask the sector, including non-UK hauliers, to once again contribute to the UK’s road network.  This helps to address the negative costs of road freight movements, in particular, the health of residents living close to roads and the battle against climate change.”

The HGV Levy payment system for foreign vehicles is managed by NEC Software Solutions UK on behalf of the UK’s Department for Transport (DFT).  Since the original levy was introduced in 2014, the system has processed over 10 million payments, which have contributed to the UK’s road infrastructure.
