For housing providers, the biggest pressure point for Universal Credit rent verification often comes during annual rent reviews in April and May. While change in circumstances and new claims are managed throughout the year, rent review periods can create a sharp spike in verification volumes within a matter of weeks. For a housing association with 10,000 properties, if 40% of residents are claiming benefits, that could mean around 4,000 rent verification cases to manage in a short window. After just coming through that pressure, now is the ideal time to prepare for next year’s rent review cycle with NEC Housing’s Universal Credit Rent Verification module.
Housing providers have just come through the busiest period of the year for Universal Credit rent verification. That makes this the right time to prepare for next April and May, rather than waiting until volumes rise again. Putting NEC Housing’s Universal Credit Rent Verification module in place well in advance gives teams time to embed the process, build confidence and ensure they are ready before the next peak begins. Instead of adding pressure during an already demanding period, early implementation can help organisations take a more proactive approach and reduce the strain of future rent reviews.
The module simplifies what has traditionally been a time-consuming administrative task. When tenants submit new or updated Universal Credit claims, housing providers need to verify rent and tenancy details with the Department for Work and Pensions. NEC Housing automates key parts of that process, helping teams complete checks faster, reduce errors and manage peak periods such as annual rent reviews more efficiently.
Gateshead Council is one example of the impact this approach can have. After going live with the module in April 2025, the council completed its year-end caseload processing six weeks faster than the previous year. In 2026, the caseload was completed 3 weeks faster, using 2 officers instead of 13.
Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing (MTVH) has also seen significant improvements, reducing the manual effort involved in UC rent verification. According to MTVH, saved time has allowed officers to “focus far more on rent collection activity and providing support to customers, rather than spending hours on repetitive administrative tasks, ultimately improving both efficiency and customer outcomes.”
In 2025, Southwark Council used the module to streamline large volumes of claims, completing 12,000 verifications in a month, with each one taking around 30 seconds. By reducing the need for manual intervention, the council has been able to improve efficiency while supporting a more responsive service for residents, and further improvements were seen in 2026.
“[NEC’s Universal Credit Rent Verification] has been really great. It has shown tremendous improvement since it was launched. Our deflection has increased from 50% to nearly 77% during the recent influx of housing cost verifications in April 2026. The NEC team has been very supportive and worked around our requirements to improve bot efficiency and overcome any hurdles. For example, they helped remove the number of consecutive errors allowed, which allowed us to run the bot the entire day and achieve an average processing time of 2 days for claims during our peak period. We also appreciate them taking on board any new suggestions and delivering on the promises.”
These examples show how the right technology can help housing providers reduce administrative burden, improve operational efficiency, and create more capacity to support tenants. By automating a mandatory but resource-intensive process, organisations can focus more time on service delivery and less on repetitive manual work.
The impact of this work has also been recognised across the sector. Together with Southwark Council and Gateshead Council, NEC was shortlisted for Best Customer Experience Innovation (Suppliers) at the 2026 Housing Digital Innovation Awards – reflecting the real value that this approach is delivering for housing teams and the people they serve.
After experiencing the pressure of this year’s rent review period, housing providers have a clear opportunity to prepare for the next one. NEC Housing’s Universal Credit Rent Verification module helps organisations streamline claims processing, improve accuracy and create more time for frontline priorities. If this year’s peak exposed just how resource-intensive verification can be, now is the time to put the right process in place before April and May come around again.
