Behind the latest processing figures is a simple outcome: councils can move faster, and residents can get the certainty they need sooner.
The latest Department for Work and Pensions Speed of Processing statistics show NEC Revenues and Benefits customers continuing to lead on turnaround time for the 12th year running, with faster claims handling and quicker changes processing across the UK.
Local authority revenues and benefits departments are working under sustained pressure. Shrinking budgets, rising demand and increasingly complex caseloads make it harder for teams to keep services moving. Every council relies on technology to assess housing benefit claims and changes in circumstances, so how well that technology performs can make a real difference.
Accelerating speed of processing
Each year, the Department for Work and Pensions publishes its Housing Benefit Speed of Processing statistics. The latest figures, published in July 2026, show local authorities using NEC Revenues and Benefits leading the way for the 12th year running.
Across the UK, NEC customers processed new benefit claims faster and handled changes, on average, two days quicker than councils using other systems.
NEC customers also featured strongly across the latest rankings. Seven of the top 10 fastest UK local authorities use NEC Revenues and Benefits. In England, eight of the top 10 fastest district authorities use NEC, while 25 of the 30 fastest unitary authorities use NEC, including nine of the top 10 and 17 of the top 20.
The strength of that performance is reflected in Wales and Scotland too, where eight of the top 10 fastest local authorities in each nation use NEC Revenues and Benefits.
Focusing on ease and accuracy
Speed of processing is not just a performance measure. For councils, it can mean fewer delays, less manual chasing and more capacity to focus on complex cases. For residents, it means getting a decision sooner at a time when certainty really matters.
That matters in a service area where teams are managing legislative change, rising demand and tight budgets. NEC Revenues and Benefits is built to support that day-to-day reality; giving teams the tools, insight and confidence to keep work moving accurately and efficiently.
Striving for continuous improvement
Customer feedback is central to our improvement plans, with regular user groups and our Ideas Portal helping shape future development. We’re constantly investing in the areas that make the biggest practical difference to customers. Recent developments include analytics tools that help councils manage debt more effectively and a mobile solution so officers can deliver customer service on the move, from any device.
The latest results are a strong endorsement of the work our customers do every day, supported by teams across NEC. We’ll keep building on that progress so local authorities can continue to deliver accurate decisions at pace.
