Burnley Borough Council has selected a cloud-hosted Geographical Information System (GIS) and web mapping. The contract was awarded under the G-Cloud procurement framework and includes the cloud services: SIS Desktop, SIS WebMap, and the Spatial Database Service. The contract includes a range of onboarding services, project management and training, as well as a cloud-managed service.
To fulfil its strategy of increasing sustainable development, Burnley Council recognised the need to migrate from its legacy system to a modern, cost-effective cloud GIS that could easily integrate with its new Building Control system. The council used the government G-Cloud framework with the requirement for a cloud-hosted and managed desktop GIS, web mapping system, and PostgreSQL spatial database. Specific requirements included integrating with the latest Ordnance Survey® National Geographical Database (OS NGD), creating and editing spatial data within a browser, streamlining constraints spatial searches, and reporting incidents on a map.
“We needed a cloud hosted and fully supported GIS and spatial database solution. Following a G-Cloud supplier review, it became obvious that they offered the best overall fit with our requirements.”
Rob Dobson, Project Manager, Burnley Borough Council
NEC supports Local Authorities in transitioning from on-site systems to cloud-hosted and managed environments. SIS software is directly used throughout the public sector as well as being integrated into applications provided by our range of technology partners. GIS and web mapping in the cloud can bring significant benefits as it has the potential to reduce the overall cost of ownership and the administration overhead of keeping software and data up to date.
