Preston City Council (PCC) has the Geographic Information System (GIS) deployed across the council and is accessible to the public via the council’s website. Following a service review, the team at PCC decided to migrate to a cloud-hosted and managed environment.
As part of the cloud migration, PCC selected a range of spatial data services to streamline its operations. The Spatial Database Service and Ordnance Survey MasterMap® Topographic Vector Service give them quick and easy access to the latest vector OS MasterMap Topography Layer. The Basemap to DXF Exporter option will allow SIS WebMap users to quickly and easily extract OS MasterMap in structured DXF format from the organisation’s spatial database. SIS ETL will manage and control the flow of data between files, databases, and servers and will rationalise spatial data management, providing synchronised data for the cloud data service. NEC will manage the software and Ordnance Survey® mapping updates on their behalf.
This project allows PCC to access the latest version of SIS Desktop and SIS WebMap, providing the council with a host of new functionality as well as improved security and administration access.
“Easily accessible and user-friendly GIS and web mapping is essential for Preston City Council. The cloud implementation meets that requirement; our community of users will benefit immensely from this project.”
–Andy Heywood, Interim Assistant Director (Head of ICT and Customer Contact), Preston City Council
GIS technology in the cloud can deliver significant benefits to local authorities and other public sector organisations without dedicated GIS resources. It has the potential to reduce both the overall cost of ownership and the administration overhead of keeping software and data up to date.
